Sedation can actually provide
a level of safety in many cases.
Often people present for dental
care with elevated blood pressure that is caused by anxiety and
stress commonly associated with dental care. I.V. conscious
sedation can often times lower the blood pressure quickly and
expediently. In doing so, there is less stress on the individual
and their blood pressure usually falls within normal levels.
Agents such as Valium, and Versed , known as benzodiazepines,
work quickly and effectively when administered intravenously
in reducing stress. Adding on other agents, such as
Demerol or Fentanyl, both of which are narcotics can give
a euphoric boost thereby decreasing anxiety. Again the goal is
safety first. Comfort is just a pleasant byproduct.
